Networked, highly integrated supply chains (SCs) and their optimal management are an essential characteristic of modern business. Particularly due to the increasing specialization of companies on individual products or services, complex supply chains can already be found behind relatively simple-seeming products. In addition, complexity has been significantly increased in recent years by two trends: (1) the trend towards customized products for customers, such as in the automotive industry, where the completion of a car can only be carried out after an order has been placed based on individual wishes, and (2) the trend towards just-in-time production (JIT) and lean management in order to keep storage costs as low as possible. Both trends have led to a massive increase in time pressure even in actually non-critical industries, redundancies have been reduced as far as possible and, accordingly, supply chains must function as smoothly as possible, as otherwise considerable losses can be incurred due to waiting times and idle machines.
In reality, there are different degrees of integration of supply chains, depending on the size and structure of the partners involved, ranging from very open structures based on emails and messengers to highly professional dedicated platforms that are either run by a strong vendor/customer and used by its suppliers and/or customers, or by a consortium of more or less equal partners. While the actual issues vary greatly between these different integration levels, the problem of providing cyber resilience is important for both of them.
The International Workshop on Secure and Resilient Supply Chains (IWSRSC 2022, co-located with the ARES-conference) focuses on bringing together researchers from all over the world to share their experience and present recent research. In addition, with the constant integration of OT technology, like factories, into IT networks, additional risks are emerging and the attack surface of companies is becoming increasingly large. Thus, the scope of this workshop covers all areas of supply chains, ranging from low-level low-integration approaches to highly integrated (de-)centralized platforms.
